Cockscomb Basin Jaguar Reserve and more...

Hi all,

I'm absolutely buggered tonight. The last two days i have been run off my feet with an American team of doctors visiting the hospital ruth and I are at in Dangriga. It has had its ups and downs, it is nice to be seeing some more things and people knowing what to expect of us but on the other hand there has been a bit of politics involved which is very frustrating.

Still i think i am tired as well because we had a huge weekend away. On Friday morning we headed to Cockscomb Basin Jaguar Reserve, about 45 minutes south and in towards to Mayan mountains. We stayed in little rustic cabins in the jungle and cooked for ourselves which was great after having to eat out all week. We did some awesome hikes up to great lookouts and to waterfalls, plane wrecks and through the jungle. Unfortunately we didn't manage to see any cats- jaguars, pumas or ocelots, but we did see a couple of wild pigs (collared peccary as the official name) some deer and squirrels and plenty of bird life.

It was the most amazing bright full moon both nights we were there and with only kerosene lamps in our cabin, and the sounds of the jungle around us, it was quite memorable.

On sunday we left the park and headed to another national park called the Blue Hole National Park. there are 2 blue holes in Belize- one is an inland ceynote, or deep pool of water, the other one of their most prized dive spots on the great barrier reef. We went to the former this weekend and then did a walk through a cave system with a small little torch- it was quite an adventure.

After that, we headed to Belize Zoo having had no luck seeing animals in the wild. It is an excellent habitat zoo and we had a good time wondering around and seeing animals in their habitat as well as some that had managed to escape! When we finally arrived back into Dangriga on Sunday night we were exhausted!
